ehh ... how do i create a monthly backup plan for WS?

Post by tvm »

Subj

the scheduler say "Daily at:"
i have too many workstations to be backing them all up daily, and there is no point

is there any way to set up an always incremental monthly backup?
the VM side allows that

thanks!

Hi again Tony,

Have you had a chance to check our official documentation?

Thanks

pardon me if i'm missing something, but in the official docs "ad-hoc" appears to be the only alternative to "daily", unless i somehow employ "backup no more often then" function

telling it to run daily and then asking it to not run for a certain amount of backup age seems like is an odd logic, when VM side of things has a more or less normal looking scheduler

i have too many machines to click though manually on a regular basis, that's also the reason i don't want daily backups

what i'm trying to do ideally is run some on the the 1st of the month, some on the second and so on on a monthly cycle, with just one backup a month for each WS
is there a way to do that?

thanks!

Hi Tony,

If you are using Server edition of VAW, standalone deployment, the below configuration should meet your requirements.

thank you!
are there any plans to introduce the same scheduling options for the Workstations?
it would be very useful to be able to able to spread the workstation backups a bit "thinner", as it's not uncommon to have more workstations than server in an office environment.

Hi Tony,

Currently, we have no plans for implementing it in the Workstation edition. You may use the Server edition to protect your workstations.

Thanks

Well, this is a rare use-case since you never know when your user will have his laptop stolen/broken, so usually you'd like to backup your workstations at least weekly (several times a week! :)). Another argument is the backup size. Changes to the data are frequent, and since the connectivity is usually a challenge you'd like to minimize the amount of data being transferred over the network during each backup run. That's why it's preferable to have as much frequent incremental backups as possible.

Currently, you may workaround it by playing with the currently available workstation edition schedule settings or use the server edition instead.

Hope it makes sense. Thank you.

i get it
yeah, in my case workstations are desktops, so connectivity and total loss are not very important

thank you for your help!

Tony,

Additional workaround might be to start backup job via command line with the help of windows scheduler. Cheers!

Tony,

Nope: agent installation package remains the same for managed by agent job type. Mode defines how this agent is going to be licensed (the amount of instances consumed) and the set of features (such as application aware processing for servers). Cheers!

thank you all for your help!
i've decided to go the server agent route
it's costly, but keeps thing clean and in one place

It certainly would be nice to have the same scheduler for the workstations as for VMs and servers, i don't get why the developers spent time writing new code when they already had a good one.

please consider this a feature request :)
