Question about HyperV Snapshots and B+R

Post by User56 »

Hello,

we have one Windows 2012 R2 HyperV Host with 5 VMs and B+R Version 9.5 (a bit older)

3 VMs have older HyperV Snapshots, like 180 Days old because my collegue forgot to delete this snapshot.

In Connection with B+R e.g. recovery etc. , is it dangerrous to have such old "HyperV Windows Snapshots" still attached to the VM?

Hi 56

Generally speaking, keeping these around is generally not a good idea *if* you and your colleague are sure they are not needed.

The characteristics include unnecessary storage consumption (the VM before the snapshot/checkpoint size and the changes would be kept), possibly reduced performance due to multiple reads and likely others. Veeam ONE does a good job of alerting you if a snpashot goes long (meaning, a high age) so you will know if it is right to remove.

If you are not comfortable removing it, a good idea is to do a VeeamZIP backup first right before you remove it (or a replica of the VM for a quicker failover) just in case anything goes wrong.
