Proxy backup vm backup

Post by ngloba »

Hello,

We have noticed that when backing up the virtual machine where is installed Veeam Backup, that is also a veeam proxy, the performance is as low as 1 Mb/s. It takes 70 hours to backup 700 Gb virtual machine.

This VM has 4 vcpu and 16 Gb RAM, so there is no lack of resources, as we understand.

We've tried forcing the proxy transport mode as virtual appliance, but the job is using nbd mode.

In the other hand, there is another VM, that when it's backuped up is using hotadd mode, and is in the same esxi, as there is only one, and both machines are in the same datastore.

How could improve the performance?

Proxy VM cannot back up itself via Hot Add mode, and backup via network leaves much to be desired in your case.

You can deploy additional proxy server (or assign proxy role to any Windows-based VM) and back up proxy server via it.

Thanks!

Hi,

But why if the Veeam server is a VM with direct access to the datastore performs wo bad, and using nbd?

1 Mb/s is very, very slow.

Apart from using another Proxy, what other options are available?

What exactly do you mean by direct access to the datastore? Do you have a backup proxy that can access production datastore via either (I)SCSI or NFS?

If so, are all these requirements met?

Thanks!

Hi veremin,

The proxy server is a VM stored in the datastore, and there is only one datastore, is only one esxi server.

This is why I understand is has direct access to the datastore. If I'm wrong, please, let me know.

Kindly, read the mentioned section of our User Guide to clarify the confusion. Direct Access method implies physical proxy server accessing production datastore via either (I)SCSI or NFS. Thanks!

Ok,

I understand.

BTW, how could I improve the backup times with this kind of infraestructure, I mean, with one Veeam server that act with all the roles, that also is a file server?

- Force NBD to use different network interface: check this post and this article
- Deploy additional virtual proxy and use Hot Add mode
- Deploy physical proxy that meets given requirements and use Direct Access mode
