Do more periodic backups result in lower space usage?

Post by BradI »

Hi,

I was having a conversation with another IT professional when an interval subject came up. I said I had all my vmware servers backed up one time per day using Veeam. He said he had his set to back up 1 time every 2 hours. I said I couldn't afford the space usage of backing up that often. He said that the more frequent the backup Veeam does a better job of deduping and you use less storage.

Just wanting to hear if that is indeed the case. And if so, I'll be switching to more backups!

Nope, having more frequent backup does not increase data reduction ratio. Thanks!

Oh, he says he's using Replibit. My mistake. But still, this doesn't seem to make sense that if you do 30 backups in the span of a month vs. 120 that 120 would result in less space usage no matter what product you use because of all the overhead in creating the segment.
