Restoring encrypted files do not work

Post by Mrivera877 »

Hello,

We are currently backing up a server which the have some encrypted drives. Whenever we do a restore to any of these drives the folders/files get restore but the user is unable to open them. The users get the following message:
Excel cannot open the filename.xlsx because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
We are able to restore the same file(s) using Backup Exec. Have any of you seen this issue? If so, how did you get it fix?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

How are you backing up now (VMware snapshot based?)? And how did you backup with Backup Exec (block based for file based)? What kind of encryption do you use (it seems you use in-guest encryption)?

If all my guesses are right, then this is normal because you changed the backup technology (from file based to block based). One way to avoid that is using instant VM recovery and manually restore files.

Best regards,
Hannes
