Full Backup to Tape from most recent Backup job

Post by elvbr »

Hi.
I am using VBR 9.5 U4a.
My current backup jobs are configured to retain 14 points forward incremental on disk, with 1 weekly synthetic full, and 1 monthly active full.
Each Friday morning, I am running a Backup to Tape job which is supposed to pickup the *latest* backup files from each job.
I've noticed that if, for example, Synthetic Full took place on Monday, and then the following Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday were incremental backups, then the Backup to Tape job would take the backup from Monday, which is very bad.
I would like to know:
1. is this the situation for both Synthetic and Active full backups?
2. how can I set VBR so that I'm always 100% sure that Backup to Tape takes the most recent backup file into the tape? do I need to give up the concept of Full backups entirely? and then rely on a forever forward Incremental, thus leveraging the "Virtual Full" backup to tape feature?

Thank you.

Hi elvbr,
Does the tape backup job copy only Monday backup in your case?
Does the job targeted to GFS or Regular Media Pool?
Thanks

Hi Shestakov.
The tape backup job only copies the Monday backup, in the example I gave.
I am not using GFS. I am only using a Regular Media Pool.

Thank you.

When the tape job backs up the forward incremental chain to tape, it creates a copy of the disk backup chain.
If in your case the tape job doesn't copy incremental backups, it's not an expected behavior and I would recommend to contact Veeam support.
Thanks!
