Can two Veeam B&R 9.5 Ub instances use the same VMM 2019 Managed Server?

Post by gmcoburn »

Hello,

Our issue is that we currently have two seperate Veeam installations, one is backing up VMware systems and has a vCenter set up as a managed server (the Primary), and the other instance backs up Hyper-V and has VMM 2019 set up as a managed server(the Secondary).

We are trying to come up with a process to migrate\recreate the jobs and data from the Secondary VBR instance to the Primary VBR instance to enable centralised management , without initiating a Full backup as there are many TB of data, in a staged method of some jobs and data at a time. This would mean that for a period of time both VBR instances would share the VMM 2019 server as a managed server until all jobs and data had been recreated on the Primary instance.

Is it possible for a VMM 2019 server be added as a managed server in two separate VBR instances , so that both Veeam B&R instances can backup Hyper-V VMs via the same VMM server?

Note that they will not be backing up the same VMs, and that both VBR installations are at the same patch level.

Our basic plan is to

1. Add the VMM server to the Primary VBR instance.
2. Disable the required backup job in Secondary VBR instance
3. Add the relevant repository from the Secondary VBR instance to the Primary VBR instance and scan it
4. Add the encyption details for the backup files
5. Manually recreate the backup job from the Secondary VBR instance in the Primary VBR instance
6. Map the newly imported backup files to the newly recreated job

Would this work? Or is there another way?

Thanks very much,

George

Hi George, provided both Veeam B&R instances are at the same patch level, your plan looks solid.

Thanks foggy.

Just to be clear, the VMM server will be a managed server in both VBR instances simultaneously, and both VBR instances could be backing up VMs located on the same Hyper-V host in different backup jobs.

Still OK?

Thanks

Yes, you're not going to back up the same VMs simultaneously, so it should be ok.
