Anyone using Idealstor Bantam or Teralyte?

Post by tchamberlain »

This may not be the place for this questions, but:

I am looking for a removable disk based replacement for tape as an offsite storage option and I was wondering if anyone is using or has tried any of the Idealstor (http://www.idealstor.com/) products? I have looked at RDX drives disk but the cartridge price seems high per GB for what you get.

Any other options/devices?

I'm in the same position of needing an offline / archive storage medium, was going to use tape but it gets expensive and now I've seen that you only get raw capacity on Veeam files I'm looking at removable HDs instead.

I've seen some SATA caddies that looked like they might do the job, just depends how well they swap around as they're removed and connected.

The Idealstor looks very interesting, anyone using it?

I have also considered using a USB driver letter manager like USBDLM (http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html) and just using a cheap external USB 3.0 docking station, with bulk 1TB SATA drives. I even found these protective cases (http://www.wiebetech.com/products/cases.php) to keep them.

That's exactly what I use.

Have you had any problems or are there any pitfalls with this setup?
Are you saving the Veeam backups directly to these drives or to local disk then copying them out to the USB drives later?

Robocopy after the job seems to be a common way of doing it

What was your final solution? Did you use Idealstor or go with something else? Just curious, as I was looking at the same device?

The the plan was to go the USB drive route, had money set aside in the budget, then drive prices doubled or tripled in some cases, so I am waiting on the prices to come back down. I tested the USBDLM software and it does work and I have the Robocopy script ready to go, all I need are the drive prices to come back down.
