upgrade of a VBR protected file server from Windows 2012 to Windows 2019

Post by kisingercampo »

We are currently a Veeam VBR customer licensed through our cloud connect partner. We have some file servers that house near 10tb and another serving around 6tb that we initially seeded with a NAS. We have interest in migrating/upgrading these file servers to Windows 2019 and would like to know how to best minimize the impact on the backup and replication processes so are interested to know if the vmdk files with the data the servers house are connected to new server vm's if there is any method available for Veeam to handle this type of change without having to completely reseed. Also, if any other options for example an in-place file server OS upgrade would behave any differently as far as Veeam is concerned although this would not be our preference. Or are there any other supported/recommended methods to accomplish these types of migrations/upgrades that would make sense to consider.

In-place upgrade is the only feasible option here, however I'd expect big incremental backups as number of changed blocks will be huge after OS upgrade. Thanks!
