New locktype for VMFS heartbeat entries ?

Post by sanbarrow »

Hello -
I am investigating a new type of locks in the VMFS-metafile .vh.sf that I have not seen before.
To check if you have one of them run
od -t x4 .vh.sf | grep -c "abcdef04"
against the .vh.sf file.
The VMware forum is no help so far - see my post https://communities.vmware.com/thread/619506
At the moment I try to unlock some vmx-file and more important some flat.vmdk files and have a hard time - my usual tricks to access locked vmdks dont work here.
I do not even know if it is a bug or a feature so I hope that somebody else has either seen one of those locks or knows about any bug that causes it.
When the problem occured a Veeam backup job against the VMs was active - so I have to include a Veeam bug in the search for reasons for the problem.
Thank you
Ulli

Hello,
I just searched on the internet and found for example this post https://vm-sickbay.com/locked-files-with-vmfs-6-esxi65

I suggest to contact VMware support.

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks for the quick reply.
I am only a VMTN moderator but no paying customer so I cant contact VMware support.
I know that article you linked quite well - I am looking into this issue since quite a while so I wrote it myself.

This locktype is a valid one - not alarming in itself ...
