Does Veeam agent for Windows support backing-up to tape drive?

Post by henlen »

We have a Windows 2019 physical server installed with Veeam Agent for Windows. The current backup jobs only backup the local drives to a network drive. Now we are considering to buy a tape loader for storing backup in LTO7 or LTO8 tapes. We wonder if Veeam agent for Windows alone (without VB&R or any other other Veeam products) can backup to tape drive?

Hello,
no - and we don't plan it. I would go with USB disks. They should be available at similar size like LTO drives and easier to handle.

Backup to tape is something for the "full product" installation with "Veeam Backup and Replication"

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry to know that Veeam agent doesn't do tape. We won't go for USB disks. For enterprise server and system, at least in my company, we don't store long-term backup files in USB disks.

For enterprise server and system, at least in my company,
enterprise customers(well, there are several definitions for enterprise), will have the full product anyway. nobody wants to manage more than hand full of systems manually. "Backup and Replication" is the management instance for "Veeam Agent for Windows" which can write to tape.

Hi henlen,

You can try Veeam B&R Community Edition as it support File to tape jobs for free (and also has a lot of free functionality available, for instance you can centrally manage up to 10 agents running in workstation mode via central management console). If you go that road, you can store your backup file made with Veeam Agent for Windows to a file share and then tape them out via Veeam B&R server. Cheers!
