Item count and size mismatch live vs backup

I have an archive which contains 1 160 132 items according to Get-MailboxStatistics.
Exchange ECP says the archive size is 233.59 GB.

When I try to restore, the export summary says "364 477 items successfully saved".
I decided to split the PST files and I got 2 PST files at total 82,3 GB.

How can this be? Backup and restore is both reported to be successful, but it seems far from truth.

What is your retention policy? How many years (or time) and is it item-level or snapshot-level?

Retention policy is "Keep forever" and "Item-level retention"

I should probably add that the source is on-prem exchange.

Hmmm. That is a big difference. I suggest you create a support call so it can be investigated where the difference is. I can think of a few reasons (no recycle bin backup for example) but te mismatch seems very high.
