Workaround for backing up Failover Cluster

Post by doughecka »

I've done some searching in the forums/online, but can't find an answer to this question... is it possible to backup a Failover Cluster Instance (FCI) that's using shared disks (bus sharing is enabled, thus no VM-level snapshots) using storage snapshots instead? I don't see why this wouldn't be an option, assuming Veeam is able to trigger VSS successfully against the active nodes. Or even a dirty backup (no app-level snapshot) would be acceptable in some cases. From the Storage Snapshot the VMs are no longer 'using' the disks, thus Veeam should be able to backup the data just fine.

There's no mention of using 'Backup from Storage Snapshots' as a way to get around the limitations imposed by FCI in the Veeam documentation, so perhaps there's a reason why it wouldn't work that I'm not thinking of.

Only if you create "storage snapshot only" type of backup job, otherwise, VM snapshot will be still triggered during backup operation. Thanks!

For Windows Failover Cluster backup you'd better use Veeam Agent for Windows.
