Veeam Backup for Office 365 vs Commvault Office 365

Post by pinkerton »

Hi Folks,

we now have implemented O365 for 600 users as well and are now looking for a solution to backup the data in it. We still have a an On-Premise infrastructure with more than 100 VMs that we are backing up with Veeam Backup & Replication (VMware). Since we are very happy with Veeam we are looking at Veeam Backup for Office 365.

We now have found that there seems another solution for backing up Office 365 from Commvault:

https://www.commvault.com/supported-tec ... office-365

There are however not much details available on their website (which usually is not a good sign). At least for other products from Commvault Veeam has a page online that lists some reasons to not use Commvault but Veeam instead, but it doesn't refer Office 365:

https://go.veeam.com/commvault-backup-emea

Does anyone know the solution from Commvault and the differences to Veeam? Maybe we've some users over here who actually migrated from Commvault to Veeam that can put some light on this.

Thanks
Michael

Hi Michael,

First, thank you for interest in Veeam's Backup for O365.

I don't think there's any sort of comparison documented, but if you have some lab resources it might be best to simply give VBO365 a try (we offer a free trial for 30 days). The setup is very simple and will take just a few minutes (no agents or complex configurations). VBO is also flexible in permissions required for a service account - you don't have to use an O365 Global Admin, but can go with Exchange Online/SharePoint Online Admin accounts.

For restore, VBO uses the same Veeam Explorers, which you might have already used with VBR. And they deliver the same level of granularity, search and eDiscovery options.

The next version will bring object storage support, and if this's something you're interested in, please contact your Veeam system engineer to get access to the beta.

Thanks!

Keep in mind you can just use a trial of VBO and get started. Feel free to contact us or your local sales team for more help and information if something is unclear.

We're in a similar boat, trailing a little - planning to migrate 4000 users in the coming year from Exchange 2010 & SharePoint 2010 to Office365 hosted by Microsoft, and looking for backup options. We use VBR for HyperV guests, and like it, backing up to repos on HP StoreOnce deduplicating (Catalyst) block-level storage. Disappointed to see that VBO doesn't support deduplicating storage (though moving mailbox backups to a new NAS will release 5TB on StoreOnce and extend its life). Will watch this space for any developments . . .

Hi Ian,

Will backup to object storage fit your needs? VBO will deliver this support in the upcoming version, and you can try it already in the public beta.

Thanks!
