From Deduplicated storage spaces 2012 to Object Storage

Post by frankive »

We have a customer running a Veeam server with 2012 R2 and a JBOD enclosure. This enclouse is direct attached (of course) to the Veeam server and formatted with NTFS. It also utilizes Storage Spaces (mirror) with Deduplication eabled. This have given this customer a deduplication rate for over 80% during the years. Very valuable for GFS and full backup complaince. We are talking app 2TB production data which uses around 10 TB effective disk space. If we dehydrate it and copies it into a share it will be around 150 TB.

SO.... they do not want to invest in a new JBOD (out of warrany 5+ years) and want to leverage the cloud and the obect storage for storing these archive data looks good. IF they start from scratch....
Is it possible copy this data to an object storage (Azure) and still keep the restore points in the GFS jobs as it works today? Does Object Storage deduplicate at all?

Yes, we deduplicate GFS when offloading to object storage.

Cool.

How about transfer excisting gfs job with a lof of GFS restore points in local repository to objetc storage only. Is this possible?

We (the customer) has a set up of olders GFS backup which is imported. They are not connected to any job.
Is it possible to upload these to an Azure blob storage an access these files through Veeam for a potential restore down the road?
(We can of course use Azure Explorer to download the backkup files to a local repository and import them to Veeam).

My understanding is that the object storage only can be a part of a scale out repository which must be connected to a Veeam job.

Your understanding is correct. I'm hoping to add support for offload "standalone" backups in the future, at least for VeeamZIP and Exported backups (not sure yet if it is technically possible to support Imported backups, will need to check with the devs).
