HPE MSA2050 Backup repositories ( FC )

Post by woobai »

Hello all,

For a new setup of our customer, we have 12 ESXi hosts connected to 2 SAN Fabrics. The datastores where the virtual machines reside are on a 3PAR 8200, which is also connected to both SAN Fabrics.

We would like to use an HPE MSA2050 to create backup repositories for the VM backup. However it seems MSA is not really fully supported in Veeam.

Is it possible to add the MSA in the Veeam B&R console by adding it with its management IP or what is the best way to go?

Kind regards

I must note that the plan was to create a virtual Veeam B&R server, with two virtual proxies. So there is no physical Veeam B&R server connected to the SAN fabrics.

Hi guys, after some digging the way for me to go seems to create virtual Veeam proxies and use the "Virtual Appliance" transport mode.

For this architecture I would first look at using physical proxies connected to the FC fabric in order to leverage Backup from Storage Snapshots on the 3PAR. Then to configure the MSA as a backup repo, since it's just a SAN, connect it to the proxy via FC (since the MSA 2050 appears to be a FC SAN) as well and make the physical proxy also act as a repository.

If you don't want to use physical proxies that's fine, but still in order to use the MSA as a repo you will need to connect it to a server somewhere via FC and use that server as the repo.

Hi Joe, thank you for your input.

Would the same goal be reached if we attach MSA volumes to the Virtual Proxy using RDMs?

Yes, any supported way to present the volumes to Veeam B&R will do.
