How do you remove an expired tape

Post by Joefrum »

Have Veeam backup and replication 9.5 update 4
In the daily media pool I have an expired tape that is also in the offsite vault.
I am unable to remove it from the pool, If I mouse over the tape all the buttons i.e. remove/delete, are greyed out.
The tape is physically not in the machine.

Most likely the removal process was mishandled when it expired (before I came along).

How do I remove it from the list or stop it showing up ?

If tape is offsite, it should be listed "Offline" in a media pool(run a library rescan).
You can use Remove from Catalog option there to forget about that tape once and for all.
Thanks!

Yep, nah.
Rescanned the library, even do an Inventory.
Tape is protected, location offsite vault, expired, daily media pool.
If you right click on the tape all options are greyed out.
If you click on the tape all options on the toolbar ribbon are greyed out.
As per your above link "You cannot remove protected tapes from the catalog. To remove such tapes, you need to switch the protection off first.", I cant unprotect the tape either. (option greyed out)

Plan B ?

Option "Protect" should be available even for offline tapes.
Open a Support Ticket and share it's number, please.
Thanks!

Case # 3901491
Tech support believe this issue requires an edit of the database.
More info forthcoming.

Case was solved by running a special query against B&R database.

Not sure if I can post the fix but here it is.

If you have Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio you can do this with that with ease, you can still do it with the SQL Console in command line as well.

First Close the Veeam Console;
Then take a backup of the database. (Using MSSMS right click on the Database go to Tasks and you will find the Backup option)
Next run the SELECT Query to check we are getting a value for the fields.
Open the Console check if the Tape is no longer Protected, the lock is gone, and see if you can right click on the tape and do what you would like.
Tape was then marked as no longer protected and I could then remove it from the Catalogue.
Success !

Cheers Veeam Tech support <---- bunch of hero's !

Hi Joe,
I have removed SQL query from your post. It is not the best idea as every case is specific and DB edit must be handled with support to guarantee DB consistency.
What worked for you might ruin another VBR server.

In case someone will have identical issue, Veeam Support will provide the query for their ticket.

Thanks for understanding!
