Support for Azure & Other Cloud backup repository?

Post by albertwt »

Case: 03902721

Hi All,

I need some help in clarifying for the backup repository support for O365 Agent V4.

Does the backup repository can now be located in Azure cloud or other cloud-based container?
so the backup traffic does not consume too much bandwidth for the WAN.

Thank you in advance.

You could already install VBO in Azure or other public clouds (AWS,...). Since v4 you can now leverage Object Storage so for Azure that would be Azure Blob and within AWS, S3 storage. If you stay in Azure, network traffic stays within the region.

Hi Niels,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I'm mainly using Azure cloud services.
Is there any best practice or guidelines that I can follow to setup the cloud backup repository on Azure?

What's the cheapest solution that is most cost effective in storing large amount of data using Veeam backup agent for Office 365 v4?

We have a machine in the marketplace however you will have to run the v4 installers to upgrade this one. Another option is to deploy a new machine based upon the system requirements.

Once set up, you can add Azure Blob and start sending backups there. This will be the most cost-effective per your request.

So, by "Offload backup data to object storage" does that mean all data goes directly to S3 and only has to touch the local drive as a temporary location??

Yes, it goes directly to S3. No, it is not a temporary location, it uses the local drive for metadata. This metadata allows the explorers to load and show the trees without the need of getting data from the object repository. And obviously, the metadata is also stored on S3 also in case the proxy dies.

Awesome.. Just finished testing it out - this is great!! I can't wait for this feature (hopefully) to come to B&R.

OK, so does the Veeam for Office365 v4 backup to Azure means no data is to traverse to WAN to OnPremise where the Veeam server resides and then goes to the destination repository?

I just wanted to get some clarification so there is no data is being pulled down to OnPremise and then pushed up again to the destination repository.

Albert,

This is a different topic then before. But to answer your question. With Veeam Backup for Office 365 (VBO) the object storage integration is meant for customers who want to run the solution in the cloud (Azure - Blob / AWS - S3) or on-prem (S3 compatible). We still need to pass the data through a proxy to be able to built the objects, save the metadata local.

That said, what you could do is keep the VBO controller on premises, and run your proxies that run the jobs as a VM in a cloud. Then you would avoid that traffic. But if you do that, then you could actually run this solution fully in the cloud also
