Commit Failback - Snapshot Query

Post by Daithi »

Hi all,

Hopefully a quick question.

Just testing failover and failback. When I commit failback, what snapshot is being referred to here under "applying last snapshot"? What snapshot is being used?

Failback commit operation started at 18/12/2019 15:35:26
No Veeam jobs need to be updated (failback to original location)
1 restore point removed by retention policy from VM
Applying last snapshot
Unlocking VM files

Hi Daithi!

Replica VM will keep every new restore point as a snapshot. So if you have Replication job setting to "keep 10 restore points" - your replica VM will have 9 snapshots alongside.
When you click Failover, Veeam will check which Restore point you want to failover to, and apply that exact snapshot from the chain on a replica machine.
Also, during Failover and Failback processes, Veeam will take additional "protective" snapshot, just in case you want to roll back or original replica status after switch.
You can find a good read on it here.
Hope that answers the question!

As for the "Applying last snapshot" record, then it seems to relate to the pre-failback protective snapshot that becomes the new restore point in the replica chain.
