Sandboxing a physical server

Post by ekisner »

So I'm using the agent to back up a physical SQL server.

We want to use a virtual lab to test an uninstall of a fairly central SharePoint add-in.

I can use an application group to stage AD/DNS and the SharePoint application servers, but the database server being physical is... more difficult.

Would I be able to restore the physical server as a VM into the sandbox, update the vmnic config to point to the port group (which does already exist in the vlab), and then just manually clean it up?

Barring that, I guess my next option will be to mirror all the DBs to a VM, back up the VM, throw it into the sandbox via normal processes, and do some IP/DNS shenanigans inside the lab.

Currently you cannot leverage SureBackup functionality for agent backups. However, may I ask you what type of virtualization platform are you using? In case of Hyper-V I think we can propose some workaround for you. Thanks.

Hi V.Eremin

Can you please elaborate the procedure for sandboxing a physical server if it is for Hyper-V environment. We want to test our windows file server file integrity before migrating it as VM. Currently veeam agent backup is ready for the file server.

You can instantly recover a machine backed up by the agent to Hyper-V. Then during the instant recovery process you would connect the instantly recovered agent machine to the Virtual Lab/Data Lab network.

Joe is spot on:

- Create an isolated network
- Instantly recover physical machine
- Attach it to the isolated network
- Run required tests
- Unpublish machine

Thanks!

Thanks a lot Joe,

We will try the steps today. By the way do we need to boot the vlab vm before doing instant recovery?

Hi Krishna,

Yes, in case you want to do it via Virtual Lab is should be present in your infrastructure before you go with Instant Recovery. If you follow the Vladimir's approach it's not required (as you use the dedicated network instead of putting VM into the lab).
