Feature Request: Making GFS (archives) More Difficult to Delete

Post by wa15 »

Currently, deleting backup copies and their respective GFS/Archive points is very simple. While there is a check box for this option, it is checked by default. In cases where customers are doing long-term retention (e.g. 7+ years), it can be catastrophic to delete these archived full backups by mistake.

It would be great to make these backups more difficult to delete. Perhaps unchecking the "remove GFS full backups" by default or having the option where the user is require re-authenticate to delete these backups.

Hello,
thanks for the feature request, noted.

Please also keep in mind that someone could also delete the files directly in the file-system.

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi,
this default behaviour seems to have changed in 9.5U4, unfortunately to the worst option.

VEEAM B&R 9.5 had "Include archived full backups" unchecked, i.e. GFS backups were left untouched when deleting the current backup copy chain.
In VEEAM B&R 9.5U4 this has changed to have "Remove GFS full backups" checked as default!

Please treat this as a bug report as the potential impact is huge.

Kind Regards
Andreas

Hello Andreas,
thanks for bringing up that it changed from U3. I'm checking now whether it's a bug.

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi there! Just checking to see if this is something that'll be fixed/improved in V10 by any chance? Having years worth of GFS backups deleted with 2 clicks wouldn't be good :D Thanks!

Immutable backups stored in Cloud Tier (available in v10) might be a good answer for that. Check this blog post for more information about the said feature. Thanks!

Great, thanks!

Any chance of adding some additional protections/notes? Maybe:

- Showing that this will delete X number of full backups going back X years. To further communicate scope of this action.
- Adding an email option where once deleted, a note goes to globally configured email list so that they can restore blob snapshots (if configured) soon
