Self service restore portal integration

Post by Anders »

Are there any plans to integrate the Veeam Enterprise manager's Self Service Restore Portal with Office365 backup?

If not, consider this a feature request...

Currently no plans in version 3 but we’ll note it down. Which capabilities would you like to see in terms of restore options.

I'll jump in on this FR too!

The main one for me is delegation. We currently use Enterprise Manager to enable Help Desk staff to restore files without giving them the "full-on" console/explorer.

I guess to break that down a bit specifically with VBO in mind, it'd good to have some flexibility in the scoping of this delegation.

e.g. x users can restore entire sharepoint sites, others specific sub sites, and others just documents on certain lists. For OneDrive, can restore files for all users or only a group of them (maybe we don't want Help Desk being able to see the CEO's files)

Yeah, some of that may be getting too granular... but you never know unless you ask!

Josh, Anders,

Thanks for the FR.
Josh: What would you use to define the groups? Active Directory groups? Users connected to a "Veeam" type of role? Azure Active Directory Groups, Office 365 groups, users or Azure roles? (Since it is VBO)

For my purposes, if I was able to select from the same list of groups as I can when configuring jobs in VBO itself, that'd be ideal.

If I'm not mistaken, that'd give me access to Office 365 groups + the on-prem AD groups that are being synced up there (I assume Azure AD is in the mix there somewhere?)

If there is a role called "Sharepoint administrator", "OneDrive administrator" and "Exchange Online Administrator" that you can assign users to, that will get full access to each area, I think it would cover most of the demand. Of course there will always be people who want more granularity. But keep it simple at first, then expand in later updates would be my approach.

The reason I asked is actually becacuse its a requirement in a backup solution, in a tender I'm working on.

Josh, Anders,

Noted down. As Niels said already, there is no integration into v3. For the next version, we are thinking about new requirements and this is one that is on the table. Can't promise anything though. Also, if we offer this, it might not be in Enterprise Manager but I assume that it is not a problem, as long as you have some sort of self-service recovery?

Going through EM isn't a hard requirement, it'd be preferable but understand it might not be that easy (from a customer perspective I'm just thinking about adding another pane of glass.)

Having it as a different web site server is not a problem. That can easily be "fixed" with some HTML linking.
As long as its browser based and not some windows-only app or similar, I dont see a problem.

Thanks for the feedback. A small advantage of a separate website is the fact that it would remove the hard requirement of having the enterprise manager as a requirement.

Not sure where this got to, but this would be *really* handy for service providers. Datto has one over us in this space.

I do know that there's an open source project that Niels works on which enables self service, but not through enterprise manager:

https://github.com/VeeamHub/vbo365-rest-self-service

https://foonet.be/2019/11/26/veeam-back ... al-update/

I haven't had a chance to play with it personally.

We successfully deployed the self service API last year and it is working well.

Full credit to Niels.
