Upgrading to V10 with SQL Express

Post by aich365 »

Case # 04022957
Please be aware of the ramifications of SQL Express 10GB limit.
Veeam One collects vast amounts of data and so can fill up quickly

We had an upgrade fail because a new table could not be created during the upgrade process and although the installation rolled back the software, it was unable to rollback the changes made by the SQL upgrade script.
We ended up with a Database that is part v10 and part v9.5

Neither install completed even after having space released by support using SQL SMS.

Although it is good practice to take a backup of the Database first and to check the size of the SQL DB it would have been helpful to have had a reminder on the upgrade page.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/one/d ... ml?ver=100

e.g. This upgrade will make changes to the SQL Database, please ensure you have a backup and space in the Database if using SQL Express

Thanks

Hello,
can you tell us how many VMs you monitor and whether you also monitor Backup & Replication servers (I could not find that information in the case)?

For production use, the user guide recommends "to use Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition or higher."

Best regards,
Hannes

Hello, indeed due to the changes in database scheme upgrade requires some additional space, especially if you monitor big VBR infrastructure.
Hope support engineers are able to help you with the case.

Hello

On checking there are over 60 VMs being backed up and monitored by Veeam ONE.

There are local backups, cloud copy jobs, Local Replicas and Cloud Replicas.

I still think it would be valid to place a warning on the upgrade page - to back up the Database first and ensure there is space for it to grow.

thanks

We wrote that in the release notes and the database size should not grow significantly.
Do you remember size of database prior to the upgrade?

Hi Nikita

I must be missing something in the Release notes as I cannot find a reference to modifying the database structure and ensuring a backup is taken and check free space.
As a lack of space could end up corrupting the database.

The Customer's database was 9.95GB before upgrade so theoretically had 50GB free?

Many Thanks

you had only 50 MB free. agree, the setup should throw a warning before upgrade.

The size of your database looks normal to me https://www.veeam.com/kb2246
