Custom Tags for temp worker instances

Post by mmasching »

Hi,

might be a new feature. To ensure proper chargeback we use customtags in AWS. Would it be possible to provide custom tags to be set for the temp worker instances?

regards

Not currently. Request noted

Is this for internal chargeback? Could you potentially report of the names?

Hi Marcus, could you give some more information on these custom tags and how many you add in general (if sensitive just DM or e-mail me). Also, what exactly do you want to charge on worker tasks? Specific services or all?

Hi Niels,
in general we are adding a "accounting" - Tag matching the corresponding application. It is used to charge the aws-fees to the application team/responsible.
In this case only one would be necessary but I really think one or multiple is not the challenge. In my case it would be the same value each time, so to have it editable in the "Workers" configuration would be sufficient.

best regards

Before you use tags to control access to your AWS resources, you must understand how AWS grants access. AWS is composed of collections of resources. An Amazon EC2 instance is a resource. An Amazon S3 bucket is a resource. You can use the AWS API, the AWS CLI, or the AWS Management Console to perform an operation, such as creating a bucket in Amazon S3.

@cidmchd they are not using tags for access, they are using it for billing. Meaning when workers are deployed for certain instances they want to use tags on the workers for that policy so that all the usage for those resources will be billed appropriately.

Hi all,

Veeam Backup for AWS v3 has been released which supports the ability of adding custom tags to workers using the RESTful API.

Hello Veeam Folks,

I understand that the Veeam REST API allows us to modify tags assigned to worker instances. (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbaws ... WorkerTags)

For all of us non-developers, though (who likely are the majority of those managing Veeam Backup for AWS in a small-to-medium business environment), is it on the roadmap to enhance the GUI to allow us to assign custom tags for the workers? Specifically, it would be great to be able to assign worker tags per protected EC2 instance. This is because, just as Marcus Masching stated in the initial post on this topic, we need to track AWS expenses per EC2 instance, including all snapshots, backups, restores, and worker instances that are related to the EC2 instance.

Thanks,

There are currently no direct plans for this but I see the point in your use case. Are you a service provider or is this for internal billing?

For now, you can already add custom tags to the relevant EC2 snapshots via the policy wizard. If you group the relevant EC2 instances, you can tag those.

Hello Niels,

We would use this for internal billing.

May I ask please for Veeam to consider adding to your roadmap a GUI option for custom tags for the workers? Considering that this is already available via the REST API, perhaps this would not be a difficult enhancement to make.

Thanks,

Thanks for the feedback on how you use it currently. We'll look into enhancing this into the GUI in the future but I can't say when this will happen.
