Best backup method (incr. vs. rev.incr.) for object storage

Post by SteveHeller »

Dear all

I am in the process of testing Veeam Cloud Tier and so far I am fairly successful.
Yet I have a question regarding the best backup method for backups directed to a SOBR with object storage (Azure in my case):
I think I just noticed that when using the reverse incremental method Veeam will offload all backup files that got changed. Correct?

Meaning when a new backup is created using the reverse incremental method the latest full backup file will get transformed to a roll-up and a new full backup file is created.
Both - the new roll-up and the new full backup file - will be offloaded IN FULL? Correct?
This means that every backup cycle a new roll-up and a new full backup has to be offload.

Would it be better to use incremental method and create an active full once a week to reduce offload size?

Thank you for your help and best regards.

Steve,

You're correct - but this is actually a bug with reversed incremental mode that will be fixed with the patch this week. See sticky topic on known v10 issues in the main forum for more information.

Normally, backup method does not make any difference. This fact is also documented in the What's New in v10 document.

Thanks!

Hi Gostev

Thank you for your reply. I did check the sticky topic you mentioned.

I have one question though:
Considering this weeks patch is applied what would be the correct function?
When using reverse incremental with object storage will Veeam only incject the changes in the already present backups on Azure so it only needs to upload the changes?
How will Veeam create the new synthetic full backup? Doesn't that need some computing power on Azures end (like with Veeam Cloud Connect)?

Thank you for your help and best regards.

That is correct, only changes.

There's no synthetic full backup files in principle, because there's no file system in object storage. No file system - no backup files! And as there's nothing to create, no computing power on Azure's end is required ;)

Thanks!
