Post by creativepc »

Hi

Is it possible to use Veeam Agent for Windows to backup Vmware Workstation on the same PC?

Hi Tommy
Yes, Veeam Agent works from within Guest OS and does not know about virtualization layer.
Backup will work just fine, for full VM restore create a new Workstation VM, boot it from Veeam Recovery Media and perform System State Restore.

Does it work even if the virtual machine is running?

Agent-based backup does not interrupt guest os running.

Are you trying to backup a running vm in vmware workstation with veeam?
You can‘t use Veeam Agent for Windows running on the „vmware workstation host“ to backup the vm.
You will have to install veeam agent for windows in each vm which runs on vmware workstation.

Hey,

If you're looking for a deeper integration for VMware Workstation such as the level of functionality Veeam offers for VSS etc, then you'll have to do some heavy lifting yourself. At a high level you could write some basic scripts to call an application that's installed alongside VMware Workstation call vmrun, you can pass arguments to this to take and remove snapshots, so if you're concerned about constantly changing data when you're trying to back it up, you could instead ensure you have a fixed point in time via a snapshot at least. You could then look at using VIX to integrate further if required.

Does that help?
