Restoring a VM from Azure Blob storage to Azure

Post by beratcakirca »

Hi,

Is there a way to use backups on Azure Blob as I can restore a VM to Azure? The thing is customer doesn't want to wait for local backup to be restored to Azure, but since they have same backups on Azure Blob, they simply want to use them if it's possible.

Regards.

Hi Berat,

In this case, you may use Restore to Azure capabilities. You will require to deploy Azure Proxy to achieve the desired network traffic route.

Thanks

Hi Fedor,

As I understand it helps speed up process of restoring on premises backups to Azure. But I don't get it how Azure Proxy will allow me to consume the backup data that is already on Azure Blob as I want to restore it as a VM on Azure. Is there a capability like this?

Thanks.

Berat,

In the described configuration scenario Azure Proxy ensures the data stays in Azure without moving to the performance tier as in this particular case both data movers reside on the proxy VM.

I think Berat is asking more about how he can access backups copied or moved to object storage in case of disaster.

If so, then, you need to:

* Deploy backup server
* Add object storage repository
* Import backups from it

After that, you will be able to execute whatever restore you'd like to.

Thanks!

I have the same doubt.
I have backups in Azure Blob and need to use then to restore to Azure without wait local backup to restore. It's possible?
In a case of disaster recovery where i have only the backups in Azure Blob and need to restore to Azure Virtual Machines, how cai i proceed?

Hi Vladimir, you mean deploying VBR on Azure, right?

Thanks.

Well, anywhere really. During the v10 launch event, we deployed it on the laptop (as according to the scenario, the entire IT infrastructure was lost except the personal laptop). But in Azure works too! Either way, as Vladimir already explained above, the restored data will not leave the Azure data center.

[MERGED] Restoring a backup job in Azure Blob using a Veeam Server in Azure

Post by JamieLee »

Hello everyone, happy to be here and this is my first post so please bear with me :? 8)

So, presently I have on-premise Veeam server 10.0, with DAS backups and a scale-out repository to Azure blob storage with several critical jobs copying to blob encrypted. This is great and I get that I can restore these jobs in Azure with the on-prem backup servers, meaning I at least have off site backup storage and some recovery options.

However, In a DR situation, where I cannot restore from the on-premise server to Azure because the on-prem is unavailable, I want to be able to restore my backup jobs sitting on blob storage to Azure from Azure. I am sure this is possible but wondering how? My guess is a VM with Veeam 10.0 installed with a copy of the on-prem configuration but I'm thinking that there has to be more to it than that.

Any help / advice / guides to read would be incredibly useful, thank you.

Hello,

I am attempting to get this question answered as well. In my testing I have successfully restored a VM from Azure Blob storage to Azure, but in my setup only backups 30 days or older are allowed to do this. I thought it was tied to backups being moved out of my local retention (30 days) into object storage instead of the copy process, but subsequent testing where I have retention settings down to two days in order to try and reproduce this, has not worked since. The documentation I've read indicates that restoring to Azure is only available from a backup or backup copy job, not from object storage. But again, I have tested this successfully, now trying to figure out how to make this an option for backups that are less than 30 days old. A Veeam resource our company has assigned to us says it's not possible but I'm going to show them my test results tomorrow morning. Am hoping after he sees my job and backup copy/scale out repository settings, he can point out how this is working.

Direct Restore to Azure is available for any restore point including those in object storage. As far as only seeing this for older backups, it sounds like you're using the "move" functionality for Capacity Tier which we introduced in 9.5.4. As of v10 you can enable copying backups to Capacity Tier which happens immediately. As long as that's enabled then even recent restore points should be in object storage.

I am trying to do this right now as well. I have a VBR VM setup in the same region as my blob account that holds the backups. I also created a Azure Private Endpoint to allow the VBR instance to connect directly to the blob without resolving externally first. I am doing a test restore of a 90GB machine and the speeds are not great. The current restore rate is 13 MB/s. I figured keeping everything on the Azure backbone in the same datacenter would have been quicker. I even tried resizing my VM to something with more CPU and Memory to see if there was a VM bottleneck.

Hi Andrew,

Do you have Azure Proxy deployed as described above?

Thanks

I don't have the actual proxy role. I am running a full Veeam B&R server in Azure also running the hyper-v role. That VBR server has a private link connection with the blob in the same datacenter. I am restoring from the blob to this server. Everything is in Azure. I understand the need for the proxy if you are initiating the restore from on-prem using the "Restore to Azure" function. That is not what I am doing because I don't want to restored VM's to be individual Azure VM's, I want them to be nested virtuals on the VBR / hyper-v server.
My blob is in the cool tier, I know that read/write operations have different costs but is performance different between hot and cool as well?

Hi, you should be able to use the Direct Restore to Azure capabilities. Thanks!
