VEEAM Customer VSphere to another hosted VSphere

Post by Alkemyst »

We are attempting to setup a relationship with a client that uses VEEAM internally. They want DR. We have a hosted VSphere on the other coast, but do not want them to have access outside their own replicants/backups. What's the easiest way to set this up? They want to be able to launch their own jobs.

Hello,

I think it should be configured at vSphere level, for example you can replicate VMs to the same target folder and restrict an access to another folders for the corresponding user.

This guide might be also useful, it describes vCenter Server granular permissions required for replication.

Thanks!

What we are dealing with is the customer wants to use their own VEEAM and replicate from their VSphere into our hosted one. Trying to get my head around how to go about this without opening up other clients datastores/vms.

This is an ideal usecase for our Cloud Connect (Backup/Replica).

Looking more into this. The caveat is we'd have to buy another set of VEEAM licensing/application to do the cloud side also some other purchases look like they will be needed.

Trying to figure out the way to go.

Yes cloud connect is for service provider to make their backup target and/or their vsphere environment ready for multi tenant usage.

Since we both already purchased VEEAM for our internal VM backups, is there any way to make use of what we are licensed for? What kind of cost will the additional services cost if this cannot work?

Our goal is for our client to give us an account in their VEEAM and limit that account's access to our VSphere / VEEAM. We want to be able to back up from their VSphere to our location.

We have Enterprise Edition 9.5, it looks like we'd need to go to 10 to get Cloud Connect? Our license is good until 2028. Not sure on our clients version.

Hi Alkemyst,
Veeam Cloud Connect is a service providers offering, and is billed differently than perpetual end-user model. Keep your perpetual licenses for your own internal use and register as Veeam Service Provider. Veeam Cloud Services representative will contact you shortly after registration to discuss your offerings and pricing details for Cloud Connect to use.
/Cheers!

p.s. Cloud Connect is possible with v9 too, but you want to keep your Cloud Connect installation equal or higher than customer's Veeams, so it is good idea to go v10 straight away.

We are both on 9.5 (due to our relationship, along with other customers of ours that we manage directly). If we can get by without a cost (esp right now with the state of things) that would be great. Not sure if there is a way to lock the VEEAM/VSphere relationship to a certain datastore/folder. I will register to have that discussion. We have our own COLO on the West Coast which is a great advantage for our hurricane alley customers and we are looking to leverage it. VEEAM has proven a great addition to our environment.

It does look like v10 is a huge update/upgrade, how do I find out the cost for that change?

If you are on active maintenance contract, change to v10 is free! If not, best to contact your partner who sold you licenses to get a quotation for maintenance renewal(it's cost depends on many factors).

Moving to v10 will be a no go at this stage.

What do I need to do to setup VEEAM so it can only access the folder we have given them on our VSphere?

1. Join VCSP program
2. Obtain Veeam Cloud Connect license
3. Start offering DRaaS with Veeam Replication targeting your hosts. User isolation and resource control is a built-in feature!
Like Peter mentioned in his first reply, you can work out with limited scopes accounts, however note that this approach does not scale much beyond few customers and has a lot of questionable moments in terms of networking, security, resource control and overall service experience.

I just about have it all working except getting NFC errors. I opened up windows firewall, it appears to still fail for port 902. My nslookups return FQDN's and permissions were upped to full admin to just test

You can check with Veeam Backup logs(C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup\JobNmae) for that error(NFC one) and you will see which component fails to connect and why(seamless networking and name resolution should work across all backup and infrastructure components, like customer proxy -> vCenter, not just his backup server).
Veeam Support engineer will guide your way to the solution if you open a ticket as well.

Have you looked, if the firewalls allow traffic on port 902 to the ESXis Managment VMKernel?

@Alkemyst I'd suggest to try isolation tests (look under "Other Isolation Ideas:") listed in this KB, you will likely find the cause of the issue.

Thanks!
