SQL service packs - ok to let windows updates install?

Post by jmertensnetuk »

Hi All,

I was wondering if there would be any issue with Windows updates installing SQL server packs on Veeam servers or do they need to be manually done.

For example I have a Veeam server that has pending update for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 3 (KB4022619)

Hello,

In general, there should not be any issues with updates of underlying components, but to be safe make sure you have a configuration backup.

Thanks

Yes the install of the update can make your environment unusable. Especially if you are using special policies like TLS 1.2 only communication etc. Also the memory requirements can change with the installation so you can render your B&R environment or its monitoring (VeeamONE) into non-working state.
You need to treat the update of the SQL server with special approach and cross-check the compatibility before and cross-check the functionality afterwards.

Hi Theruck,

Have you observed such behavior in a real environment? Which updated caused it?

Thanks

yes i observed it on SQL 2012 SP3 with some out of memory errors and had to upgrade to SQL 2016 SP2. No issues before the SQL 2012 SP3 was installed.
