RMAN deletion process

Post by jnap »

Hello

We are trying to use veeam linux rman plugin (with veeam V9.5 u4) in that way:

Incremental backup every day
Full backup everyweek
retention 30 days

backup runs correctly using typical rman commands but we have the retention question
in veeam documentation, it explains to use

configure retention policy to redundancy 7;
delete obsolete;

Oracle DBA thinks we need to use "crosscheck" rman process to update rman catalog correctly and have clean retention process
I don't see this into the veeam helpcenter documentation
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100

So, we try it anyway but this crosscheck process is taking hours to finish...

Is the "delete obsolete" command really sufficient to have the good retentions?

thanks!

Hello,

Technically, DELETE OBSOLETE command deletes backups defined by the currently configured retention policy and the preliminary crosscheck execution is not mandatory.
On the other hand, the CROSSCHECK command allows us to avoid any kind of discrepancy between RMAN catalog and backup repository file system. That's why crosscheck is highly recommended,
for example to get the list of obsolete backups (look under: "Reporting on Obsolete Backups") or this article provides step by step description of removing obsolete backups.

I assume that you have faced the known issue with crosscheck duration and the best option is to upgrade Veeam B&R and Veeam Plug-In for RMAN to the version 10.

Thanks!

Ok thanks for your answer!
Good news if this crosscheck issue is not present with Veeam V10!

Have a good day
