How to move origin backup data to another repository server ?

Post by hoon0715 »

Hi, all.

I searching the 'How to move origin backup data to another repository server'

I currently have a Repository server on both Main and DR site.
I want to move backup data to the Repository server in the DR site in order to free up the Repository server capacity of the main site.
And I wish I could keep my backup chain.

Is there any way for me?
Is there KB about this?
I'd really appreciate it if you could help me !

Thanks !

Hello,
cut & paste and then the repository needs to be changed in the backup job.

I googled www.veeam.com/kb1729 for you ;-)

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks for reply !

It is KB that I saw for the first time.
According to method A, is this the only way to move existing backup data manually? Also, I don't want to change the Repository server path....

for scale out repositories, you also can use "evacuate". But that moves all files https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100 (the request sounded to me that you only want to move parts of the repository)

Yes, we expect that the customers are able to do a copy & paste operation of a folder. It's "just one folder per backup job".
Also, I don't want to change the Repository server path....
I'm not sure what that means. Moving means a "new path".

If unsure, I recommend to create a dummy job and test it before doing it with production data.

I would like to move my existing backup data to a new Repository server.
This is not mean change the Repository server path for an existing Backup Job.

Did I misinterpret KB's content?

What do you want to do with the data moved to repository in DR site? Do I understand your request right - you want to move older backups to a secondary location to be able to shorten the retention on the main location to free up some space there?

1. I want to free up capacity by moving backup data from the main repository server to the DR repository server.
This is simply moving existing data.
This is not mean changing the backup path (backup repository location)

2. Is it recoverable with backup data moved to the DR repository?
Do I keep the backup chain even if I cut and paste backup data from the main repository into the DR repository?

I'm very grateful for many answers.

as I said: moving to a different repository means, that you have files on a different repository. different repository mean, that it is a different path (at least the hostname / repository name changed. even if the path on disk stays the same). maybe it's lost in translation.

so I again recommend that you just test it with a dummy job. migration to a different repository server means, that you need to move the files manually.

All files of one job need to be moved together.

Cut & paste must be done for everything that belongs to a job. the KB article describes it. (Method A)

Thank you very much for your reply.

I'm trying to copy through a Backup copy job.
However, it is very slow, just like a network shared folder. (Speed in KB)
I'm thinking of using a WAN accelerator.
.
I'll share the results.
Thank you very much for your help.

Note: it's not possible to map data copied by a backup copy job to backup jobs.

I you still want to do what was asked in the initial question, then I can only repeat what I mentioned before.

Really?
Then, if I need to restore from copied backup data how can I use them ...??

Doesn't the 'Backup copy job' copy the backup chain??

You can restore from the copied data, you do not need any jobs or mapping for that. I still don't understand what you're trying to achieve - move everything and continue backing up to the new repository (continue the backup chain), just move everything and continue backing up to the original repository or move just some (older) part of the chain and continue backing up to the original repository, anything else?

1. just move everything to new repository
2. remove original backup files
3. In this case, How do I move the backup file to use the moved backup file as a recovery point?

Thanks for your help ; (

Сut&paste will work. You will be able to restore from any restore point in the moved chain after rescanning the new repository. Don't forget to remove the moved files from Veeam B&R configuration - if you leave the backup job without changes, it will start a new backup chain in the original repository after that.
