restore file from S3 compatible

Post by karim »

Hello,
my question may be stupid but I prefer to ask you.

I'm performing file restore tests from s3 compatible storage (storagegrid). the local extent is in maintenance mode to make sure the download comes from s3
i restored a virtual machine file that is 50Gb, Veeam downloads 10gb can you tell me why? is it due to compression and deduplication?
is it possible to know the exact quantity that will be downloaded?

thank you for your reply.
regards.
Karim.

@karim You are correct that with compression and deduplication factored in, the amount of data stored in the capacity tier will be less than the actual vm file size.

Worst case estimated is VM size divided by 2 (typical compression ratio).

thank you @Gostev

I restored a whole vm directly from the s3 storage through a vpn and I noticed that the speed does not exceed 100Mbits. however we have a 1Gbits connection, is there any limitation for this scenario?
thank you.

No limitations from Veeam side... can't comment on your VPN though.
