convert symantect tape backup to Veeam

Post by khan_cloud »

We are in the process of moving to use Veeam as our backup software and replace it with our existing Symantec backup
We have around 400 TB of Symantec tape backup data which we wish to decompress and validate the data within Veeam data files

Hello khan_cloud,

Unfortunately tapes recorded by third-part vendors are not supported by Veeam B&R, so the only option is to restore such tape to disk and then write it back to tape with Veeam B&R file to tape functionality. Cheers!

Hi Dima...Thank you for your prompt response. Here is the plan which we are thinking of...

Connect 35 TB NAS as primary repository for Veeam.
Connect the tape library to the Veeam server
restore one tape to disk and then write back to tape with Veeam B & R
please confirm...

khan_cloud,

Sounds ok, but mind me asking how long you need to store those tapes? I usually recommend just to keep the setup of a trial version of such third-party software next to the tape media (say on USB flash drive). Whenever you need to restore - you need to spin up a VM, install the trial version and perform a recovery.
