Questions about a specific Immutability scenario

Post by bhagen »

When @gostev let the cat out of the bag about Minio a couple weeks ago in the Digest, I yelled out loud and freaked out my co-workers. Thanks a lot, Gostev!

Since then I've been doing some research, and I haven't found an answer to the main question I've been asking, so here's the question:
How can I perpetually make copies of only the last 7 days of backups immutable?

I don't want to use my S3 Object storage to "extend" my SOBR; I don't have enough money for that! I only want to use it to keep copies of the last 7 days of backups (ideally a full and 6 forever-forward incrementals), and make those immutable.

(I already have backups, backup copies offsite, GFS jobs from those backup copies, VM replication jobs going to a hot-standby vsphere cluster, and quarterly tape archives of all backups.)

If this is possible, what settings do I use? Are are they in the backup job, the backup copy job, in the SOBR settings, or...somewhere else?

Thanks!

It‘s only possible, at the time, when you create the bucket.
Preparing to Use Immutability

In order to use immutability, you need to enable the Object Lock and Versioning features on your S3 bucket at the time you create the bucket. Keep in mind that you can enable Object Lock only at the time of creating the bucket.

The setting is on this page of the New Object Storage Wizard:

Thanks, but I understand how to create an immutable bucket; I just don't understand how to only keep copies of the last 7 days of backups (ideally a full and 6 forever-forward incrementals) in that immutable bucket.

Use a Backup Copy job in the immediate copy mode and with 7 days retention, pointed at SOBR with Capacity Tier copy mode enabled.
