Using Veeam as a migration Tool?

Post by JonathanSpringham »

Hi everyone.

We have a customer that has approx. 12 servers residing on an old on-premise vmware platform and they would like to move their servers to our hosting environment (Hyper-V) in one of our Datacenters.

Is there any good reason why we could not leverage Veeam Agent (via the VCSP) on these servers, create a cloud backup job to our Datacenter then at point of cutover, simply run an incremental then restore from backup onto our platform?

1. Deploy Veeam agent to each server
2. Configure cloud backup jobs for each server to Datacentre
3. Create recovery media for each server
4. Build base VM's in Datacentre
5. Leave for 1-2 weeks and verify good working backups of each
6. Test restore of server in Datacentre and verify integrity
7. Individual restore of each server and IP reconfiguration etc.

Anyone else done this? I can't think of any reason this wouldn't work (all networking and routing in place as a pre-requisite of course).

For less downtime, I suppose a small installation of VBR at the source site with replication to the Datacentre would also be an option?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jonathan,

Yes, there are some existing threads with a similar scenario, so it should work. Please review these threads for more info > Hyper-V to VMware

Thanks!

Thanks Vitaliy,

Seems like it should work as expected but I'll complete a test run of one of the servers to prove the concept.

Cheers!
