Can Windows SMB file Backup with storage snapshot?

Post by horaceho »

Hi all,

good days.

I had some question about Veeam NAS Backup hope to get some advice from yous,
I have two physical file-sharing servers using SMB, one is 2008R2 so only SMBv1 only and the other one is 2012R2.
both file paths are share by a storage LUN. I know Veeam V10 NAS Backup can support storage snapshot to file sharing backup. can anyone please advice for the solutions and find some said need to create some per-script before the backup starts to create a storage snapshot?

hope you guy have some advice or suggestion for me, thank you so much.

hope you all stay safe.

Hello,
are you looking for this checkbox https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100 ?
I know Veeam V10 NAS Backup can support storage snapshot
well yes, if it is a storage / filer (e.g. Netapp, Isilon, Unity etc.). It's not about Windows machines that have a LUN connected. Here we use VSS snapshots which are independent from storage hardware.

Your setup is not 100% clear for me
1) do you have 2008R2 SP1?
2) what is the idea of using NAS backup instead of agents?
3) did you add the two servers to managed servers, or are you adding the file shares directly? (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100 - "File Server" or "SMB Share")

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi Hannes,

thanks for your reply, this just a planning and still not yet take action and it's all 3PAR storage and the storage LUN is zone to Windows Servers, I'm concern that want to use storage snapshot because below point :

- that windows Servers SMB share directory is so full (over 90%) and unable to using VSS snapshot.
- share drive is over 26 folder and over 30 TB sizing.
- now i'm using another backup tools and backup from file base without VSS because the disk full issue.
- i noted that Veeam and using some script call storage take a storage snapshot to backup file and folder from that snapshot ? and can i restore files to windows SMB folder ?

Can you redirect VSS snapshots to another volume on the server?

Hello,
For file based backup: storage snapshots are not possible for your setup. Those scripts are for filers. Not for block storage.

Restore works to any location. It's "just files" :-)

Hello,
NAS settings are only for NAS devices, yes :-)

I guess the best load reduction is is possible if you go with option 2 (agents). I see no reason, why you want to use NAS backup over agent backup. Agent backup has chanced block tracking which should reduce the load (assuming that you have a supported system)

Hi HannesK,

thanks for your reply and advise,
I'm thinking same as you but it's hard for make a daily inc backup and a weekly full backup if it's just allow "ONLY ONE" job at 1 time for same agent. Now I'm using the old backup tools and always need to run few more agent at the same time (some time I need to run 6 job at same time ).

Hello,
the concept of weekly full backups does not exist for Veeam NAS backup... so what is the idea of "forcing" the agent to do it?

I see that your software (and probably also the hardware) is old... and I also see, that you try to compare different technologies from different vendors... that makes it even more complicated. I can only suggest to "just do it".

Hi Hannes,

thanks for your great advise, and i will "DO MY BEST" !
and i just noted that my Veeam R&B are missed a better network (now i only connect a CAT5 network). the first step i will add a 10GB network for it first and monitor the performance .
