Veeam 8.0.0.2084 and Exchange 2019

Here's a question that I don't imagine anyone would be able to answer, but I hope to be surprised!

I'm running Veeam 8.0.0.2084, I would like to know if it's capable of truncating Exchange 2019 transaction logs. I don't need any granular features like exploring mailboxes, just the basic VM-level backups and that..

Yes, I know the day will come when we should upgrade Veeam, but for now this is what we have.

Version 8.0.0.2084 does not support Exchange 2019 at all. Support was added in 9.5 Update 4, quoting the What's New document:

• Microsoft Active Directory 2019, Exchange 2019 and SharePoint 2019 support for application-aware processing

cool. What I'll do then as a workaround is schedule the log purging manually. I assume that standard freezing of the VM and the conventional backup will still work

Depends what you mean by "standard freezing of the VM" and "the conventional backup".

When it says.. "Preparing guest for hot backup, creating snapshot, releasing guest, etc"... I think that will all still work but haven't tested yet, it shouldn't care what windows OS it is as long as it can authenticate

What‘s the purpose of the backup, if you can‘t restore Data after a backup, because veeam explores cannot handle the exchange database files

You can try to backup the vm with vpshere/hyperv snapshot. But guest application processing should be disabled. You will have to do exchange item level restore with Exchange powershell commands.

With Exchange databases, there is no „manual method“ to truncate logs. The only way I‘m aware of is to set the databases to circular logging. This way, the logs are deleted directly after creation.
But this is not recommended, only if you have a DAG with at least 3 copies.

I'm not looking for item level restore, as I said in the first post - "I don't need any granular features"

What's the purpose of the backup? Only to restore the entire VM in one chunk if something dies, or to just activate the replica on another host.

You need guest Application Aware only for veeam purposes.
If you use the option "Enable VMware tools quiescence", then you are perfectly safe, if vmware tools (or HyperV Tools) support a consistent snapshot with vss providers.
