Revers incremental with synthetic full

Post by ShawnKPERS »

This is a dumb questions but is it recommended to do a synthetic full periodically on a revers incremental to reset the backup set associated to the full? I'm just not sure how the backup handles having an ongoing chain of incrementals associated to it with no end. Would this eventually build up "cruft" on the constant full .vbk or am I just worrying about nothing?

With reversed incremental, synthetic full is created each time when the job runs. Please review the sticky FAQ topic for more info on how reversed incremental backup mode works.

Thanks I went back and took the time to read the part where it explains synthetic backups and it helps verify what I already thought. I was just curious to know if it is ever recommended to do a full full, to "reset" the full .vbk file on a reverse to start a new set or if it just fine to let it run for years?

Hi Shawn, this question has already been covered in this thread, please have a look: How often do I need a full backup?
