Granular restore from Exchange DAG Passive database backup to an active Database

Post by rkg »

Hi Guys, we have an Exchange 2016 with two servers in DAG configuration, 1 server in NYC with the actives DB, an another server in Miami with the Passives DB, we are preparing a Veeam configuration in Miami to backup different systems and servers including Exchange, and we want to know if is possible to do granular restore of email/Items from a backup of a passive DB in Miami, and restore directly this items in the actives DB in NYC?

Not sure if with the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange, is possible to do a restore like this, i now that in Exchange with single server configuration is very easy, but not sure if is possible restore from a passive DB backup directly to an active DB a single item.

I appreciate any comment to clarify this.

During the restore you don't select a database as the target. You choose the target mailbox and the client access server, and the exchange backend will redirect the restore to the active database.
So yes it will work as you expect.

As written by Max. We use Exchange Web Service to write into the selected mailbox. Autodiscover or selection of a CAS server is needed to identify the target mailbox. Then EWS is used for transport which is native Exchange access method.

Well Guys, finally i make the test and yes, in a environment with the two Exchange servers 2016 with DAG enable, you can backup only the server with the passives databases, and then make a restore of any item directly to the server with the Actives databases, is something that veeam don´t especified in any KB, but yes is possible, you don´t need to make a "Failover Cluster" backup job to could restore items to the active server.
