Hyper-V on Win 10: No VMs found.

Post by DigiTalk »

Hello!

I'm running Windows 10 1903 on a small personal server here.
It has two VMs (a debian Gen 2 VM with pi-hole plus OpenVPN and a starface telephone system based on CentOS).
I would like to back them up using Veeam B&R Community Edition 9.5 Update4.
After some issues with the credentials not working, I resolved that one with this KB: https://www.veeam.com/kb1914
Now I was able to add the local Hyper-V Supervisor, but it does not find any VMs or volumes.
It also does not give any error, just when I click "Add" in the "Virtual Machines" windows, I get no VMs.
Also "Manage Volumes" is empty - no matter how often I rescan.

Both VMs run fine and can be accessed via Hyper-V-Manager.
What am I missing here?

Thank you very much in advance for your Input!

Hello!

Windows 10 Hyper-V is not supported (please refer to System Requirements for more info on supported hypervisors).

You can still backup those VMs using agent-based backup jobs though.

Thanks!

Thank you for clarification!
I could have sworn, that I saw Win10 on the supported systems list, but that may have been the client systems.
I will use agent-based backup in debian.
As for the phone system I will just back up the Hyper-V host including the vhdx file.
That should suffice.

Thank you!

According to this page: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... kup_server, Windows 10 is supported as a backup server.

Am I missing something?

You'll have to use the free Hyper-V Server to backup the VMs with Veeam. (Note it says evaluation but it is fully functional)

[MERGED] Restore VmWare backup to Hyper-V

Post by Dvas »

Hi everyone
Recently I've setup VBR Community edition to backup one of production servers, running as VM on VmWare 6.0.
Backup goes fine, but I want to be sure it could be restored. Most straightforward way is to restore backup to duplicate VM on same VmWare, but I don't want to use production resources for this. So I thought - I have Win10 workstation, which could run standalone Hyper-V server, and could be used for such test. But I haven't found any way to recover my backup anywhere, except for VmWare it came from. Am I doing something wrong, or VBR Community edition unable to perform restore to another system ?
Thanks in advance

Hi Dmitry,

please check thread above. Win10 Hyper-V is not in the list of supported platforms.
You can use Windows Server with Hyper-V role or a free Hyper-V Server for your case.

/Thanks!

Any change of Win10 being supported in near future? Just finished migrating my home lab from esxi to Win10 hyper-v...

No plans as of today.
Win10 Hyper-V should not be used for production workloads, it's rather a dev\test feature of a client OS.

Yep, would still like to backup my lab :-) using agent for windows for now, but since I have a tons of VMs running, being able to use win10 hyper-v as a source would be a bit simpler.

Hi Hyvokar,

You may create a protection group and back up the VMs using the Agent Management capabilities of VBR. At least this is what I would do in that particular case.

Thanks
