Enabling synthetic fulls on already configured job

Post by kaboomza »

Hi there,

Just wanted to know if anything strange will happen with a job that's been running for months if I decide to enable synthetic fulls, or will the restore points just increase? will it remove any of the current restore points to make way for the synthetic fulls and in order to stay with the retention policy defined in the job ?

I cant afford to lose any of the retention points until they automatically get removed as per the policy

Hi Jaques, I can assure you that nothing bad will happen in case you enable synthetic fulls - nothing will be lost, overwritten, whatever unless the job retention comes into effect. Existing restore points will stay on disk but the future backup chain behavior might slightly change depending on the backup method used prior synthetic fulls enabling. For example, in case it was forever forward incremental before, it will switch to simple forward incremental. This KB article should explain the changes in good detail.
