Offsite Backup - Rotating Disks
Hi!
we plan to make a weekly backup to HDDs which we are able to store offsite. What would be the best solution for this?
Right now, we have one backup repository on our nas located in the serverroom.
A second backup repository on the same model nas but located in a different serverroom.
However, the second nas is also connected to the Veeam server which doesn't save us from crypto viruses.
Therefore we are looking for a solution where we can create a weekly backup to a small nas and bring the hdds somewhere else / disconnect the nas. Or maybe a cloud backup (immutable backups) would be better?
many thanks

Re: Offsite Backup - Rotating Disks
Both would work.
Rotating Media support:
https://www.veeam.com/kb1154
https://www.veeam.com/kb4048
https://www.veeam.com/kb2802
Suggest to check cost and processes (bandwidth, vacation times of people,...). The cloud offload has the advantage to "just work" without someone changing the media.
The changeable media option is maybe cheaper.

And here's the user guide section for a better understanding of how the rotated drives approach works in Veeam B&R.

Thanks for your fast reply.
the benefit of "just work" would be favorable I assume we can use VeeamCloud Connect or AWS?
Those "external repositories" would be safe against crypto viruses?
Would have to test the bahaviour of the nas with raid hdds which are removed and added again

The RAID approach is maybe error prone as such a system was not build with this usecase in mind.
Yes, I forgot to mention the Veeam Cloud Connect Service providers. Some of them offer Tape out option that is as well "immutable" as you can not delete data from the Veeam console.
And of cause local tape with offline media would work as well.
For object storage, please check object-storage-f52/unoffizial-compatibi ... 56956.html
