Limit concurrent tasks per ESXi host

Post by mnordstr »

Hi,

I have a relatively beefy Veeam server with 10G NIC to the switch. Our ESXi hosts (standalone) are 1G. Is it somehow possible to limit the max concurrent task per ESXi host? We now run two tasks on Veeam (proxy) and when it backs up from different hosts we get 2G bandwidth, but if the VMs are on the same host we obviously only get 1G. Would be nice to be able to force Veeam to always backup from different hosts at the same time to maximize performance and minimize the backup window.

Thanks for your comments,
Mattias

Hi Mattias, do you mean you have just a single default proxy using NBD transport mode?

Have you considered using virtual proxies per host using hotadd instead?

There is a reg key for how many NBD connection we can use by host. But as Alexander shared maybe HotAdd processing is the better way as you do not have to mess with default settings.

Thanks for your insights. The change rate is quite small on these so I think I will stick with the current setup instead of the complexity of adding virtual proxies to the hosts. Maybe I'll just define the order of the VMs in the job to be on different hosts for VMs next to each other, that's should partially solve it :)

Yep, that could help (depending on the VM size and number of disks) but not guarantee you the type of processing you'd like to see.
