Backup VM's on HyperV through CloudConnect
Hi
I have a small environment with one Hyper-V host and some VM's on it. The goal is to backup the VM's to my backup service provider
through cloud connect. What is the best practice and which product I should install on my Hyper-V? Agent is not recommended because of inconsistent
restore of VM's.What about open ports? Is port 6180 enough?
Thanks

Re: Backup VM's on HyperV through CloudConnect
Hello,
and welcome to the forums.
Directly on the Hyper-V host, there should be no software installed (no matter whether it is backup software or anything else).
The first question is, whether you only back up to cloud connect. Or whether you keep a local backup for faster restore. The "classic" 3-2-1 rule question. https://www.veeam.com/blog/3-2-1-rule-f ... ction.html
Second question is, which applications you have and how you want to restore them (AD, SQL, Exchange, Sharepoint, Oracle). If none of them, then you could go for standalone agents inside the VMs. I would only go for standalone agents up to 5 VMs (to keep it manageable). The question is, whether you need the explorers: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/explorers/
The alternative is installing Veeam Backup & Replication inside a VM. As you sound new to Veeam, I recommend the quick start guide: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/qsg_hyperv/
Best regards,
Hannes

Hello
There is an active directory VM to restore and also SQL on the other VM. Why you recommend Backup & Replication inside a VM instead of installing it on a hyperV host? I tried it and works fine.
Thanks

Re: Backup VM's on HyperV through CloudConnect
Hello,
for the explorers you need Backup & Replication.
Because the GUI you see in Hyper-V is actually the management VM of the Hyper-V host. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/virtua ... chitecture
It's not supported and it's against best practices.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100 lists the ports you need. 6180 and 443 should be enough.
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Backup VM's on HyperV through CloudConnect
Hello
So the first recommended option is to install an additional VM with R&B and backup all VM's to the service provider.
The second option is to install Veeam agent inside the VM. Restore of AD object can be done from Veeam explorer in this case, correct?
Thanks

Hello,
only the first. AD objects can be restored without agents inside the VMs.
Veeam is agentless per default (see the quick start guide I posted earlier).

Re: Backup VM's on HyperV through CloudConnect
Hello
Thanks for the answer. I found on Veeam help center this document that explain how to restore such databases like MDF, EDB and I suppose also AD for backups made with Agent for MS Windows in the case you choose not to install additional VM for B&R. Is that correct?
Restoring Application Items from Cloud Repository
If you use Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows to create backups in a cloud repository, you can restore data from such backups using the backup console on the tenant Veeam Backup & Replication server.
To restore application items from a cloud repository:
1.In the tenant Veeam Backup & Replication console, locate the necessary Veeam Agent backup.
2.Open the Veeam Backup browser.
3.In the Veeam Backup browser, browse for the database file of the application whose items you want to restore (DIT, EDB, MDF etc.).
4.Double-click the database file to open the corresponding Veeam Explorer.
5.Use the Veeam Explorer to restore application items you need.
Thanks

Re: Backup VM's on HyperV through CloudConnect
Hello,
yes, the explorers work with VM based backup and with agent based backup. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/explorers/
1-5 is possible, but complicated. I would go for application aware backup and just use the large restore button in the ribbon. You can also use the backups section on the. There are many ways.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100
As I said... agent based backup makes no sense with applications.
The quick start guide I mentioned multiple times already has a section for restore. It's the same with cloud connect https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100 for Windows VMs
Best regards,
Hannes
