Backup Strategy

Post by trin95 »

Hi all,
I am new to Hana and and I have a few questions about best HANA backup strategy. My SAP System on HANA DB is installed on two different servers: Server1 is SAP Applikation and Server2 is HANA DB.

Would this be the best backup strategy for HANA systems?

1. daily snapshot of both VM servers: application server(server1) and HANA DB(server2) on vmware. Do I have to run pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts here?

2. daily backup HANA DB(server2) via the backint interface.

If I want to restore the systems, in which sequence does it happen?

First I restore my application server and HANA server from Snapshot. after that I restore the database. Is that correct ?

Thanks a lot.

Best Regards

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

Yes, your strategy sounds good. HANA scripts are available at veeamhub.io

And there is also a whitepaper that should give some more details https://www.veeam.com/wp-veeam-sap-hana ... e-v19.html

Hello Hannes,
Many thanks for the answer.

Do the pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts have to be executed on both servers (SAP application server and HANA DB server)? Can be used the same script on both servers (applikation Server and HANA Server) ?
Where can I read how to create these scripts?

Many thanks for the help.

Hello,
the scripts are for HANA (the name is "hana-pre-freeze.sh" ;-)) I have not heard, that the application server requires any scripting.
Where can I read how to create these scripts?
I'm not sure what you mean. The script already exists. It just needs to be configured.

Hannes

Hello Hannes,
many thanks for your reply.

Where can I download these scripts? Do the scripts have to be adapted to my VM and DB.

And one more question, is the DB stopped (with these scripts) before the snapshot?

Many Thanks

Hello,
uhm, did you see the whitepaper I linked and the http://veeamhub.io domain I mentioned ("applications" is the way to go)?

Both have the same link to the scripts including explanations what it does.

The databases keeps running. It is not stopped.

Hannes

Many thanks!!!

Just one last question. Where should these scripts be set up: on the HANA server or on the Veeam server?

Many Thanks

Hello,
Just one last question.
do I get a beer if you have another one? ;-)

Page 24 of the whitepaper has the picture, where the script needs to be added to the backup job. General information about scripts are available in the user guide: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100

Hello Hannes,
many thanks for your help. Although I can not spend a beer, I ask one more question :-)

Do these scripts have to be stored somewhere on the hana server or just built into Veeam job?

Many Thanks

Scripts will be always placed on veeam server and copied to the vm (Application-aware processing feature is used for copying and running the scripts) when the backup job starts. :)
