backup job causes VM to crash

one backup job, running at 0:00,should backup /etc and /var/spool/cron on a linux VM (vmware)
immediatelly after starting the job the VM crashes (kernel panic)
i can reproduce the error when forcing the backup to start.
veeamagent is the newest version
OS on the VM is debian 10.7 (kernel 4.19.0)

veeam backup & replication error message is:
04.01.2021 00:34:15 :: Task failed. Error: Ein Verbindungsversuch ist fehlgeschlagen, da die Gegenstelle nach einer bestimmten Zeitspanne nicht richtig reagiert hat, oder die hergestellte Verbindung war fehlerhaft, da der verbundene Host nicht reagiert hat

is there a better way ? i dont want to backup the whole thing, but only the configs. if there is another, better way, how i can backup certain directorys im open for this...

Thanks for the details. If you need just several files you can add Linux host to managed servers, register it as a file share and then go with file level backup job. Cheers!
