Veeam backup for AWS upgrade from v2 to v3 failing

Post by rich_l »

Hi all,
has any body had a successfully upgrade from Veeam backup for AWS v2 to v3? I would assume yes but given it's only been out 5 weeks? not sure who was brave enough to try over Christmas :D

My issue (case #04584396 logged this morning, support team is working on it) is after the upgrade I get the message
502 Bad Gateway
nginx/1.14.0 (Ubuntu)

I can still access the //updater page and ssh to the server so I could pull the logs and upload them.
Looking in /var/log/veeam/backup/Service.log I see a lot of errors about postgresql not being available
Looking in the postgresql log (/var/log/postgresql/postgresql-10-main.log) I have the following errors

2021-01-12 01:31:42.465 UTC [7621] HINT: Future log output will appear in directory "log".
Can't exec "": No such file or directory at /usr/bin/pg_ctlcluster line 211.
Error: could not exec start -D /var/lib/postgresql/10/main -l /var/log/postgresql/postgresql-10-main.log -s -o -c config_file="/etc/postgresql/10/main/postgresql.conf" : No such file or directory

I'll update with the solution once support have a fix.

Hi, this indeed looks like a service is not starting in the background. Please keep working with support to determine the issue.

Thanks!

While the root cause has yet to be identified, certainly in this case (and probably all my other failed upgrade attempts) the cause is the PostgreSQL 10 to PostgreSQL 12 migration part.
Support provided about 30ish steps to run the DB migration part (install PostgreSQL etc...), not something I am willing to do for a migration of multiple Veeam backup servers given I cannot confirm the status of the DB migration, (although it is probably ok), but is possible there may be other issues further down the road, so I have redeployed v2.

As a side note I am currently using "veeam-aws-cloud-backup-paid-v2-0-1-630-patch-1" there does not appear to be an equivalent for v3? The only other option I see is "veeam-aws-cloud-backup-byol-v3-0-0-319" is this license wise the same (I think not based on the name) as deploying v3 directly may be my best option at this point.

So the question remains, other people must have successfully migrated from v2 to v3?

well v3 was easy to install and configure as expected, sadly no RDS Auroa support yet.

We have multiple successful upgrades therefore I suggested to keep working with support as this may be a new issue. On the versioning, v2 did have a patch 1 but v3 only has the GA version which was released last month.
