License renewal coming up, convert sockets to instances?

Post by lando_uk »

Hi

We have our yearly socket license renewal coming up, this was quite a price hike over last years with the reasoning being that people are cramming so many more VMs into the same amount of sockets than in previous years. Well not in our case as the hosts are pretty old, anyway... To keep our costs down (or at least stable) we could convert from Sockets to Instances, but what's the current conversion rate? And are the instance licenses still perpetual ?

Thanks

Hello! Yes, I think in your case you will benefit from converting. "Instance licenses" aka Veeam Universal Licenses (VUL) are available both with Subscription and Perpetual contracts, and the conversion price will be different depending on what you choose. Thanks!

Hi Gostev. Whats the conversion rate currently? From older posts, if you have greater than 1:7 ratios, you mentioned that support will just count our current numbers and offer that that as a conversion, is that still the case?

Hi, Mark! The migration policy has changed a couple of times since then. Currently we don't use the conversion ratio at all in any shape or form: we just give customers a license for the number of instances according to the number of VMs they have on hosts protected by the socket license. Thanks!

On the same topic, if we have perpetual socket licenses that don't expire until next year, is there any cost for converting these to instances/VULs right now so our environment can be on an all instance based licensing?

With the questions concerning licensing it's better to reach your sales representative, as the team behind this forum is with R&D, so we are not well versed in the licensing aspects. Thanks!

TBH I completely lost track of the current state of the migration policy because of its constant tweaking by the Pricing Strategy team based on the external and internal feedback. However, I'd certainly expect this to depend on your Socket license edition. Because VUL is effectively ENT+, I assume you will need to match the Socket license edition before you can convert to VUL.
