Question about tape retention

Post by Kan Ng »

Hi,

I'm very new to Veeam and need your advice.
My question is about tape protection/retention.
I have 2 sets of tape and set retention to 2 weeks (14days) and Backup to tape job start at 7.00 am daily.

If the backup job done at 9.00 am, for the next 2 weeks that retention expires. When The tape will be writable? at 7.00 am that the job start or 9.00 am that the job last finish time?

Because I received [Warning] email to add free tape to media pool at 7.00 am.

If the tape gonna expires at 9.00 am. What should I set to make the same tape will be writable on that day and time? Decrease the retention time to 13 days?

Any suggestion please advise

Hello Kan,

Can you please clarify how media set creation option is configured in the target media pool? Thank you!

Hi Dima,

Please see pictures for my media set.
I set it as "Create new media set for every backup session" to rewrite the whole tape instead of continue write.

Hello Kan

Sorry for the delay! Thank you for sharing the screenshots, the settings look good: with media set per backup session you, indeed, will have a dedicated tape (or several tapes in case backup files require more storage) per single job run. I've checked the described behavior - the expiration date of the tape is set at the end of the job (you can compare the end time in the job with expires in field in the tape grid). Hope that helps, cheers!

Hi Dima,

The expiration has set at the end of job (7.51am). So When the next2 weeks that expiration should end, Can the job will write on tape at 7.00am as per job start? Or system need to wait untill 7.51am then Job can start.

Tape is locked until 7:51am. You can manually retire the tape if you need it.
If you had problems with your last job and it was finished 3-4 days after the original start date of the job, the next tape job for this tape will also have this 3-4 days delay

I configure my job always like this:
If I have to use my tape again in 4 weeks, tape expiration will be 3 weeks.

Data will no be removed by retention policy. It can only not be used for a new tape job session until the period is over
