Archive to cloud object storage

Hi,

We are backing up our NAS to our on-prem repository and sending it to cloud object storage for the archive.
We configure it to keep 1 version for short term retention and beyond that will be for archive to the cloud object storage.
My question is, what if i have files that doesn't change (no new version) and doesn't get access for months or even years, does this go to our cloud object storage for archiving?

Hello! No, only the older versions are getting archived off. Do you want all versions to be copied to the cloud? Because this is something we've been thinking of adding as an option. Thanks!

Yes, it would be nice if all versions would be copied to the cloud for DR purposes. If only the older versions are getting archived off then what if for some reasons disaster strikes the on-prem infrastructure then i can only recover the older versions then?

Yes, that is correct. We do provide the ability to make a copy of on-prem backups though, just not to the object storage yet.

We have also recently implemented the archive solution for an SMB customer (approximately 25 TB of file data) to ensure a secondary copy in an immutable (Backblaze) cloud. Since a really large portion of the data is static, we have noticed that only 3 percent of the data is actually protected via an older version in the cloud. We are now considering a low cost NAS device in an external datacenter to store a backup copy, however it is not immutable. We don't have linux expertise, so a Linux backup immutable backup repository is not desirable.

Best strategy for us however would be a mechanism to protect that data in an immutable cloud. So, either we need a mechanism that will bump a one time protection of all file shares, or a Cloud Tier approach, comparable with the current implementation for non-file share backups. So we would really appriciate if that mechanism would become available.

The work is already started on this. So to confirm, you want a full copy of your NAS backup in object storage, just like the SOBR Capacity Tier provides for image-level backups?

Yes, that is really really nice feature to have. Send a secondary copy of NAS backup to the cloud object storage.
My customer just hit me on this missing feature in Veeam NAS backup. If this feature will not be included in Veeam sooner, I think some customers will walk away from Veeam.

@Gostev, if you go full "archive" mode on S3 wouldn't be nice that this target run as forever instant NAS recovery and allow users to still have the need a read the data through Veeam. It would save space on a primary keep or the need to have secondary storage on-prem. You know like those file appliance gateway to S3 but only in read mode.

Yes, correct keep them all the time up for consultation but stored on object storage on-premise/cloud.

Instant restore is a bit resource consuming operation. For nas backups it's possible to restore any file via Enterprise Manager (where you work only with metadata files, thus it's much more light weight). Cheers!
